This assignment was the quest for additional content which could be used to improve the Liberty’s Standard American History course, HIUS 221. My topic is the 1778 creation of the First Rhode Island Regiment, which was the first black regiment, created on February 14, by the Rhode Island General Assembly during the Revolutionary war. Not only did they recruit slaves to soldiers, they also offered then their freedom for serving in the Continental Army.
This task was completed by using the Jerry Falwell Library database American Historical Imprints. To accomplish this task, I searched for Rhode Island General Assembly Minutes for Feb 14, 1778, within the Minutes, on page 15, I found what I was looking for. I also used Journals of the Continental Congress, dated March 29, 1777 to support the creation of black recruits. I then used this data in conjunction with the Slave voyage database to look at the slave trade between 1777 and 1779.
The two documents and the database could be used to teach students the important role black men, as slaves, had in the American Revolution, and how the slave trade still functioned in America during the Revolution.
I am still learning the art of recording and editing with a green screen, sorry the quality, and of course, I am still learning how to present on video.
Thanks for stopping by.
